As a dual person you are born with a conscious as well as an unconscious self. One has power the other does not.
The conscious self within you speaks your will.
The unconscious self within you manifests your will.
This means simply that verbally you can rant and rave all day long about what you will and will not do but until you commit that desire or will to your unconscious self your rants and raves are like pouring water on a ducks back---you know--no effect is due!
Think of your conscious self as a piece of chalk and your unconscious self as the chalk board. As you write your thoughts during your waking hours those thoughts become imprinted on your "hidden" "unconscious self " when you go to sleep--because this is when that part of you which was lying dormant, comes alive.
Religion and psychology has done a very poor job of bringing mankind into this wonderful understanding of his/her ability to change internally and rise to a more divine level of self.
All that negative talk in the biblical text about "the tree of knowledge" is just that, rubbish! The tree of knowledge is your temple (spiritual/physical self). Ingesting this type of superior wisdom that was, of course, gleaned from our ancestors--without a full understanding leads to a total misunderstanding about the true functionality of self.
Remember,
...the unconscious self is the how and the when
...the conscious self is the what and the why
Fine
